ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ATLANTIC ASSOCIATION OF HISTORIANS

Saint Francis Xavier University
Antigonish, Nova Scotia
29 September - 1 October 2000

The theme of the 2000 Conference is Teaching History: Charting Future Directions. Late September, as a new university term begins, seems a timely occasion for historians to gather to discuss the challenges of teaching our discipline. This conference will provide a forum for dialogue about the use of non-traditional sources (both electronic and material) as teaching tools and the current role of history in the high school curriculum. On Friday evening (29 September), the conference will be launched with a public lecture by Paul Fussell, "one of America's most distinguished commentators on 20th-century life", who will talk about The First World War and Cultural Modernism. This event is sponsored by the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation Lectureship. On the following day, there will be three workshops with invited panelists which will focus on the following themes: "Clio in Cyberspace", "Clio in the Classsroom" and "Clio in Concrete Form". One of these workshops will be held at Sherbrooke Historical Village (transportation provided) which will also serve as the venue for our evening banquet which will feature St. Mary's smoked salmon and prime rib. Prof. Tony Mackenzie, a well-known raconteur, will enliven the evening with his vast repertoire of stories. We extend to all members of the Atlantic Association of Historians the invitation to join us for what promises to be an interesting and entertaining conference.

Please note that all delegates are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements. More detailed information about the upcoming conference will be posted by late June on the AAH site.
