Tools For Teaching General Equilibrium
edgwrth2.exe Building an Edgeworth Box - Consumption
This programme shows how an Edgeworth-Bowley box is constructed. It will be clear how a single point in the box represents four values : the quantities of two goods A and B allocated to two individuals 1 and 2. The total endownments of the goods can be altered.
equigen.exe General Equilibrium - Exchange Economy
This programme continues from the previous one to show a general equilibrium in a two good, two consumer exchange economy. First, the initial allocation of goods is chosen. The either price can be modified to see how the same line in the Edgworth Box represents both consummer budget lines. Each consumer's choice is then shown. The student can attempt to find the equilibrium prices when the budget constraints and the consumers choices are shown. The programme will show the solution if required.
taton.exe Tatonnement
The student can try to find the equilibrium price system in a three good economy. Each price vector chosen by the student is normalized and then plotted on the price simplex. Excess demand for each good is shown. In effect the student is acting as Walras' auctionner. The programme will find the equilibrium with a tatonnement process if required.
walras.exe Walras
This programme is similar to the previous one, execept the student is acting as Walras' auctionner in a 4 good 3 consumer economy. No graphics are drawn. The programme will find the equilibrium with a tatonnement process if required.
pcge.exe Programme that calculates a general equilibrium
This is an old-fashionned console programme that can calculate a general equilibrium in a reasonably complex economy and report the results. The programme is called with two parameters, the name of the input file first then the name of the output file. The input file describes the economy and specifies what the output file will contain. The economy is described in a format that resembles the Arrow-Debreu specification of an economy.

No documentation is available but the following 9 example input files should be a good guide.

expe1.txt Contains examples of exchange economies and illustrates the concept of "gains" from trade.
expe2.txt Models an exchange economy where all consumers are alike. There should therefore be no trade at equilibrium.
expe3.txt Contains the 2x2 model presented in J.B. Shoven and J. Whalley's Applying General Equilibrium, Cambridge University Press, 1992, pp. 44-47.
expe4.txt Similar to Shoven and Whalley's 2x2 model (EXPE3.TXT)but showing how labour supply could be endogenously determined.
expe5.txt Contains an example of an economy with production and gains from technological progress.
expe6.txt Contains an example of intermediate production.
expe7.txt Contains an example of a nested production function. Formally this is the same as the production of an intermediate good (Labour in this case).
expe8.txt Similar to Shoven and Whalley's 2x2 model (EXPE3.TXT) but with a public sector : a government that taxes agents in order to offer public goods. These goods are actually produced by the private sector.
expe9.txt Contains a model with public goods which the economy did not produce initially.

Other Tools
mkgraph.exe Make graph
A programme that draws a cartesian plane and the graphs of one or two functions. The result can be copied to the clipboard for inclusion in a document or a paint programme. Four predefined sets of functions are availabe in the menu File / New. The last choice are the supply and demand functions of the market. These are drawn in the typical economics fashion, independant variable is measured along the vertical axis. The appearance of most of the elements of the figure can be modified.
pmcosts.exe Problem Maker - Costs
A programme that randomly generates problems about short run or long run costs. The selected cost curves are drawn on a Cartesian plane and can be copied to the clipboard. A table of quantities and the various costs is created at the same time. It can be copied to the clipboard. It is possible to create "holes" in the table so that students may calculate the missing values. This question table can also be copied to the clipboard.
scalc60.exe Small calculator
A small calculator that evaluates functions such as x^2 - sin(x) at the specified value of x.
sgcalc60.exe Small graphic calculator
A small calculator that evaluates functions such as x^2 - sin(x) and draws their graph.
Data Envelopment Analysis
Win4Deap win4deap.exe
Windows interface for Tim Coelli's DEAP programme
MDeap mdeap.exe
This programme meant mostly to introduce students to DE Analysis calculates input or output oriented efficiency scores with constant or variable returns to scale.
